The Differences Between Self-publishing and Going with a Small Publisher
New authors often ask: Should I choose a small publishing company or self-publish my book? Both paths have real advantages. The right choice depends on your goals, budget, and how much control you want.
Working With a Small Publishing Company
A small publishing company typically focuses on a specific niche and offers guidance through the publishing process. Benefits may include editorial support, brand association, access to contests or reviews, and some level of marketing assistance. In this model, you usually share royalties, follow a longer production timeline, and give up some control over pricing and design—but you gain structure and professional oversight.
Choosing Self-Publishing
With self-publishing, the author controls every step. You select your editor, formatter, and cover designer, set your book’s price, choose Amazon categories and keywords, and manage your marketing. You keep most of your royalties after retailer fees. Publishing is faster and more flexible, but responsibility for quality and promotion falls entirely on you.
Where I Fit In
Whether you work with a small publishing company or choose to self-publish, my role stays the same: I’m your book designer. I create professional interiors and covers that meet publishing standards and help your book look credible, polished, and ready for readers—no matter which route you take.
Which Is Better?
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Some authors value the support and credibility of a small publisher. Others prefer the freedom, speed, and ownership that come with self-publishing. Both are valid—and both can lead to success.
